January 2018 in the Kivii Life

January 2018 Recap

The month in the life of some nerdy photographers

Happy February! I hope the first 1/12th of your year was fantastic and I hope you have some fun plans coming up this month. January was pretty slow for us, me especially, as all the fall weddings have been wrapped up and delivered, and the early 2018 wedding season hasn’t quite gotten going. I definitely took advantage of the slow month to get some much needed relaxation in, because we have TWENTY weddings already booked for this year so I won’t have a lot of time to breathe once those get going 😀

I did get to shoot a little in January though. I photographed a boudoir session for a good friend of mine and hopefully I’ll get to blog some of those images soon. I also met up with some photographer friends to take portraits of this cute couple at the 21C Museum Hotel in Durham. If you get the opportunity to stay there or even just have a night out in the restaurant or bar, make sure you go check out the vault downstairs. The hotel building used to be a bank and this was the actual vault used, so don’t lock yourself in!!!

As part of our “decompress from wedding season” schedule for January, John and I caught up on a lot of television.

  • Shows we both really enjoyed in January: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon), Mindhunter (Netflix), The Good Place (NBC), Altered Carbon (Netflix)(okay, this one actually premiered February 2, but we’re almost done with it and I like it a lot!!!)
  • Shows I watched in the background while getting work done: Lovesick (Netflix), Scandal (I had never watched this before but I’ve binged it so hard I’m almost caught up to the current season), Superstore (NBC), This is Us (NBC), Grown-ish (Freeform), Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (CW), Riverdale (CW)

In other entertainment mediums: I watched BladeRunner for the first time, because John really wants to watch 2049 with me and I’m a completionist. It was weird. I still have a lot of questions. I doubt 2049 will answer them, but we’ll see. I started reading Oathbringer by Brandon Sanderson, but while reading the prologue I found myself referring back to the first book more than I wanted to, so I just restarted The Way of Kings to have it fresher in my mind. I also started listening to a podcast read through of A Song of Ice and Fire. If you’re into that fandom, I definitely recommend giving the NotACast guys a listen.

January wasn’t spent solely on the couch though. We’re in final training mode for the half marathon we’re running at the end of February. I think I clocked just shy of 50 miles last month and John did even more (he’s much better about getting a run in early in the morning). One of the long runs was extra special because we turned it into a monument tour. We headed up to Washington, DC to visit some friends for a weekend trip. In addition to running 8 miles through the district, we ate some ShakeShack, visited the Air & Space Museum, played board games, and drank delicious beer (including a pit stop at Stone Brewing in Richmond).

23 days left in February now and I’ll tell you about them next month!

  1. […] I managed to get a Kivii Life monthly recap out for January, and February, and even March, but then wedding season arrived and it was all I could do to keep up […]
