The first Saturday in May is always a great day: it’s Derby Day & it’s a popular wedding date (that’s when John & I got married). May 1 of 2021 was no exception: we had a wonderful spring wedding at Wakefield Barn and that’s featured here.
As always, some stories of the day interspersed with the beautiful photos!

And now, the story of A&B’s wedding day, which actually started the day before with a beautiful and fun rehearsal. I was told in advance that the most important thing to A was fun photos of all the couples’ nieces & nephews (niblings, if you will) having a blast and being themselves. That was extra easy at the rehearsal, since they all wore costumes! LOVE LOVE LOVE
I mean, how great is this?!
And now, onto the wedding day. A got ready with her sister, mom, best friend, and nieces and nephews at Wakefield Barn’s bridal suite.
Mid prep instructions for where the readers should pause during their ceremony readings.
And a mid-prep snack break for these two…
This little man looking at Aunt A!!! Such a sweet moment.
Time for a quick first look with dad…
… while B arrives and waits upstairs until it’s time for the first look.
A & B saw one another for the first time in the shade of this gorgeous tree on the lawn in front of the barn. There was not a cloud in the sky on Saturday, and we wanted to make sure they could see one another without having to squint, so shade it was!
I always love these first look moments! So much joy at the fact that they’re about to be married.
After a few minutes of portraits with the almost-weds, we ran through group photos. I think I did a pretty good job at holding most of the kiddo’s attention. They really love Aunt A & Uncle B so they were having a great time.
All except the littlest niece who wasn’t too keen on being anywhere except her mom’s arms. We’ve all been there right?
This next shot is such a winner. Cousin love <3
A few minutes between group photos and the ceremony for last minute touchups (and flower girls helping A out with her bouquet while she reapplies her lip gloss.
A lemonade toast with the kids just before getting ready to walk down the aisle
A little nap before the ceremony to make sure you’ve got enough energy isn’t a bad idea actually
A looked positively radiant as she walked down the aisle!
Everyone was looking at her of course 🙂
How sweet is this ring moment?
Justice Earls makes sure the license gets signed and it’s officially official!
The sunshine was perfect for lawn games during cocktail hour and the kids truly enjoyed themselves.
Inside, the Southern Oak team had set up the barn in a lovely green & white, with pops of colorful wildflowers, for the reception.
This flowers were perfect for the cake too!
When A & B entered, they were immediately attacked with hugs!
A’s dad welcomed everyone and she was moved to tears AND laughter – always a good sign at a toast.
This little corner is totally a great spot to be: chicken fingers & french fries PLUS a puzzle?!?! Sign me up.
Just before sunset we snuck out to get a few more portraits (including that silhouette one you saw up top!)
A few more toasts from the couple’s siblings before the dance floor opened.
I loved how B was continuously playing with his new bling. Wedding rings are always a change – especially for people who don’t wear jewelry.
Wide eyes for cake time!
And then hit the dance floor – now that vaccines are out there dance floors are getting more fun again.
I really love this moment of the kids playing around upstairs.
And I’ll leave you with this colorful nighttime shot of the newlyweds.
Thanks A&B for having me at your wonderful May wedding. And thanks Emily for shooting with me and Abby for assisting us!!
